K-pop, K-drama, K-fashion—it seems like everything “K” is taking over the world by storm. And in the middle of these world invasion? If you’re into anything “K”, you’ve probably heard of the name Lee Sung Kyung. The 26-year-old actress/model from Seoul is definitely a force to be reckoned with in show business. In fact, W Magazine (you know, one of the top fashion mags in the world) even dubbed her as the Gigi Hadid of South Korea! Now that’s saying something. What with several hit TV shows (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo being the latest) in the bag, a successful modeling career, and with more than 5.5 million followers on Instagram to boot, it’s really not that hard to place her in the upper echelons of stardom. So how did she make her way into the showbiz pinnacle? It’s not an easy journey, that’s for sure.
Lee Sung Kyung: The Birth of a Star
Lee first broke into the world of spotlights and cameras in 2008 when she joined a super model search contest. Nope, she didn’t win the grand prize (only winning the consolation Lex Prize and placing only 11th in the competition) but that didn’t stop her from reaching out for her dreams to become a superstar. The year after, she joined another competition, the International Asia Pacific Modeling Contest. This time she finished 5th while winning the Unix Hair New Style prize. This launched her modeling career (and a successful one at that!) and since then has been a familiar face in South Korea’s modeling world.
Jumping From Modeling to Acting
A successful modeling career would definitely not be enough for someone of her caliber when it comes to dreams, talents, and charisma. In 2014, director Kim Kyu-tae was looking for a fresh new face to star in her new K-drama project, It’s Okay That’s Love. As fate would have it, the director’s teenage daughter had been following Lee’s Instagram. And when the girl showed the director Lee’s Insta feed, he was immediately sold! She took the role and went on to become one of South Korea’s beloved heroine. After that, she took more roles such as in Queen’s Flower, Cheese in the Trap, Doctor Crush, and the recently concluded and a certified hit, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo. And so, the rest, as they say, is history.
Lee Sung Kyung: Certified Insta-Star
Okay, now that she’s a bona fide star in modeling and acting, what’s next for Lee? Taking social media by storm, of course! With more than five million following her on Instagram, I guess you can say that she’s already done that. Lee’s IG is actually one of those that you can immediately tell that people will actually engage in. Why? Well, first of all, she’s so adorable—just look at her IG feed and you just can’t help but smile. Secondly, she’s a natural when it comes to posing in front of the camera, whether it be a selfie or a professional shoot. Well, I guess her modeling background is paying huge dividends now in her social media accounts. And lastly, her sense of fashion is utterly impeccable. Don’t believe me? Check these out:
Now who can really resist her beauty, impeccable style, and uber-adorable charm? As you can see from her Instagram pics, Lee has definitely mastered the art of looking great. That’s why, as what the title of this post is saying, Lee Sung Kyung is my current Korean style peg. I just love her—from how she confidently (yet still adorably) carries herself to the way she dress herself up. And with her as my inspiration, I’ve actually compiled some Korean style looks that I think perfectly embody her sense of style. Check out some of the items I’m planning on picking up for myself:
