Stranger Things: An Ode to the 80’s Pop Culture

To be honest, when I first heard about Netflix’s new series, Stranger Things, I wasn’t too keen on watching it. I thought that it was one of those over-hyped series that are, well, disappointing. Just a brief background on my watching habits so you’d understand where I’m coming from. You see, I’m not really that big on TV/streaming series. Heck, even a series as big as Game of Thrones wasn’t able to pique my interest.

However, due to the insistence of a close friend of mine, I watched Stranger Things. At first I thought I’d just give the first episode a go… what harm can it do, right? Well, after a whole day of binge watching, here I am, done with all the episodes, and writing about the series. To put it mildly, I got hooked. And it’s all thanks to my close friend who kept in insisting that I watch it! Ha-ha!

Stranger Things: An Homage to the 80’s

Why do I like Stranger Things? Geez, I don’t know… what’s not to like? Everything about it is great, actually. The actors, the story, the music, and the fact that the setting was in the 80’s—just perfect! Just think of it as an amalgam of all the great things about the 80’s—from the movies Stand by Me, Goonies, Aliens, Poltergeist, ET, Close Encounter of the Third Kind, etc. to the cool line up of songs like Should I Stay or Should I go by The Clash, Heroes by David Bowie, and Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart.┬áTruly an homage to 80’s pop culture! No, don’t worry, I wouldn’t be giving plot points in this writeup except that everyone dies in the end! Ha-ha! Kidding! Anyway, just watch it and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Why I I Love the 80’s!

You see, I love the eighties—yes, even if I didn’t exist yet at that time. In fact, I think it’s one of the most fun decades in the 20th century. What with all the great films, the fun music, and of course, the colorful clothes, again, what’s not to like about the decade? Stranger Things’ production staff was on point on their costume design. I just love how they made all the characters’ clothes look rather similar yet different from the 80’s movie’s characters they were paying homage to.

Speaking of clothes, 80’s fashion really is the bomb, right? It’s fun, it’s colorful, and well, their chic. That’s why I’ve decided to get my 80’s look going for the coming autumn season. And since autumn is just around the corner and Nancy Wheeler (played by Natalia Dyer) rocked some of the most stylish jackets in Stranger Things, here are some 80’s inspired jackets and sweaters that I think will look great this coming cold seasons:
